Do Something Day

DoSomething Day, Australia’s biggest celebration of giving back, is about contributing, inspiring, volunteering, making a donation or spreading some kindness to locals in need or to community organisations.

DoSomething Day culminates on July 25, however in the lead up the Sharks have thrown their support behind the campaign, which is backed by ClubsNSW, with a couple of special initiatives.

In 2017, hundreds of clubs, their members, community organisations and individuals rallied behind the cause, with the campaign reaching more than 5.6 million people.

To coincide with DoSomething Day, the Sharks entered a staff, family and friends team into the Sutherland 2 Surf, with the club to make a donation to Wanda Surf Club and St Vincent de Paul, whilst a couple of weeks ago the Sharks Leagues Club provided afternoon tea to participants and their parents at Skillz4me, the Sharks Have Heart-supported program for children on the Autism Spectrum or with additional needs.

DoSomething Day, is about supporting the many charities, causes and organisations that need help, with the Sharks happy to get on board in their own efforts to make a difference.

At the Skillz4me special event, on behalf of Sharks Leagues Club the children were handed out gifts and provided refreshments and snacks, the parents coffee and muffins, in a mid-year celebration of one of Sharks Have Heart’s most significant community programs.

A program combining sport, fun and therapy, Skillz4me sessions focus on building confidence, improving social skills, coordination and balance, stimulating neural pathways, eye tracking and concentration, in a healthy, safe and friendly environment.

Skillz4me, which was founded and conducted by Jason Stanton from Sharks Have Heart in partnership with his wife Sarah, runs over 40 weeks, is a one-hour weekly session free to participants, attracting 15-30 families each week.

The Sharks support includes Stanton and his special brand of presentation skills in delivering this special initiative, with NRL squad member Aaron Gray a Skillz4me ambassador.

As for Team Sharks taking part in the Sutherland 2 Surf, an 11km fun run which is the Sutherland Shire’s longest running community event, the club will be donating an additional $50 per entrant (on Team Sharks) at this year’s event.

The Club’s participation further showcases the Sharks community spirit while at the same time raises funds for a good cause.
